âI know about the crystal, Vin,â The Boss said.
âWhat! So, I came back for nothing? But how do you know already?â
âSalli told me.â
âSheâs here?â Vin asked.
âShe was. Sheâs gone to the apesâ town. Come on. Iâll tell you all about it over dinner.â
The Boss took his arm, guiding him towards the Guardsâ Academy. âOne thing though, Vin. Sam didnât make it. He didnât survive the journey here.â
Vin stopped in his tracks, turning to face The Boss. âSamâs dead? Oh, no!â his shoulders slumped, and his head fell onto his chest.
Vin suddenly felt the exhaustion of the mission, like a massive weight on him. He shook his head, but his neck felt like it wasnât strong enough to hold up his head.
âI am sorry, Vin. I know he had a lot of respect for you. I sure wish Iâd had a chance to meet him.â
âSalli must be devastated.â
âSheâs the strongest woman Iâve ever met.â
âTheyâre all like that down there, Boss. You should meet Kerri.â
âI hope to one day. By the way, Kerriâs trying to rescue Carter.â
The Boss steered him towards the empty dining room of the Guardsâ Academy. The long tables had already been cleared after the recruitsâ evening meal. Vin pushed his pie around his plate while giving his report on the mission into the Lost Lands.
âNot hungry, Vin? Thatâs not like you.â
âI donât have the stomach for it,â Vin said. Leaning back in his chair, he looked up at his boss. âThereâs something oddâ¦â Vin said. âI didnât see one ape on the way home. I would have expected with Naz escaping, they would have been out searching, or at least covering the entrance to the passes, but I didnât see one.â
The Boss ran his fingers through his beard and scratched his chin. âHmm, that is strange. Tell me, whatâs Nazâs plan?â
âHeâs trying to pick up the apesâ trail to find where theyâre taking the crystal. Heâs gonna leave signs for me to follow. I shouldnâtâve let him go off on his own on such a dangerous mission.â
âYou followed your orders as a Guard should,â The Boss said. âI believe Naz did what he thought was best, and I completely trust his judgment. He tried to make sure we knew what was happening. We needed to know for sure the crystal had been lost, and we had to know that double-crossing, good-for-nothing, Sonny has betrayed us. Sometimes a boss has to make difficult decisionsâbut making those decisions is what makes a good leader. You werenât to know Salli had been here.â
Vin sat staring at his pie, shaking his head.
âAnything else I should know?â the Boss asked.
âOh yeh, Naz promoted me in the field. He made me Ranger ScoutâFirst Class,â Vin said.
âGood move. I know youâve earned it. Iâll deal with the paperwork.â
âIt doesnât feel like a good move thinking about Naz out there on his own. And he said you would up my rations.â
âHe said what? Just for this mission or permanently?â
âBoss, this is no time to be counting pies.
